You may have the best product or service in the world, but unless you communicate this effectively, your potential customers may never hear about it. Here are my top tips for powerful communication:

Spreading the news
• Research suggests that press editorial is seven times more effective than advertising.

• A website can reach a vast, worldwide audience. For a relatively small outlay, you could make a huge impact.

• You don't have to pay the high fees commanded by London agencies. For a cost-effective service, try smaller marketing, design and PR companies or freelance consultants outside London.

Letting go
• For important material, avoid 'Do It Yourself' writing. Poor copy reflects badly on your corporate image, whereas good copy gives you the best possible chance of turning prospective customers into clients.

• Learn to let go. Some of the worst writers are managers who know their product intimately, but don't know how to communicate its strengths strongly, simply and clearly.

• Before contacting a consultant, make a list of everything that is special about your product. Customers are interested in benefits, benefits, benefits.

Words make a difference
• Never underestimate the importance of words - ultimately, they can make the difference between business success and failure.

• Well written material is easily readable (with reasonably short sentences), interesting, and avoids unnecessary jargon.

• Internet research shows that the readability of web pages has a highly significant effect on the response obtained. The text needs to be in short, easily digestible chunks.
